The 72 Hour Pill

The 72 Hour Pill is an emergency contraceptive. If you have had unprotected sex then using the 72 Hour pill as soon as possible can prevent possible pregnancy.

What's involved?

Emergency contraceptive pills contain the hormone progestogen. They should be started within three days (72 hours) of having unprotected sex. They are more effective the sooner they are taken. However they are not as effective as using other methods of contraception such as the pill or condoms regularly and do not protect you against sexually transmitted infections.

Where can I get emergency contraception?

See the Emergency Contraception page for details of where you can get hold of the 72 Hour Pill.

All the advice and treatment you will receive if confidential - wherever you received it.

How effective is it?

Emergency contraceptive pills are very effective. If taken within 24 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse, they will prevent at least seven out of eight pregnancies that would have occurred if no emergency contraception had been taken. Emergency pills are more effective the sooner the first pill is taken after sex. They will not protect you from pregnancy if you have further unprotected sex.
