Emergency Contraception
If you have had unsafe sex, then seek help within 72 hours. But don't delay, emergency contraception works best if taken as soon as possible. Even if its longer than 72 hours since you've had unsafe sex, you should still seek help, as something may still be able to be done.
Emergency contraception is available from the following places:
In Portsmouth and Hampshire a scheme providing FREE Emergency Contraception at most local chemists is available to women including those under 16yrs Check if your chemist/pharmacy is included.
Free / No appointment needed:
- Your local Contraception and Sexual Health (family planning) clinic.
- A young people's sexual health service. E.g. Sex Sense

- St Mary's Treatment Centre, St Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth
Free / You may need an appointment
Your GP will be able to offer emergency contraction on prescription including 'Out of Hours' service. Details will be available from your GP surgery. You can also visit any other GP if you do not wish to visit your normal surgery
Out of hours
If all other clinics and services are closed, then you can also get emergency contraception from:
- A&E Department, Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham
- Emergency Gynae Ward, St Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth
- Gosport War Memorial, Minor injurys
- Havant War Memorial Hospital, 59 Cross Way, Havant
- Victoria Cottage Hospital, 8 North Street, Emsworth
- Petersfield Hospital, Swan Street, Petersfield
